Pew Pew. The Everyday Hunter’s Guide

(Part 9: Hunter Pets Abilities Part 1)

Hyacintha here, and today I am interviewing the beautiful Night Elven Hunter Ohanraela. Although the Hunter class is one of the simplest to pick up and is a very popular choice when it comes to pure firepower, it has its share of complexities that not everyone understands. This guide is designed to show you over several parts what the class has to offer, how each ability is used, and how to improve yourself as a Hunter. Ohanraela will be my aid in doing so.

Today, we will be specifically going over Hunter pets and Hunter pet abilities. Ohanraela is a master of pets. In this installment, we will be talking about the abilities that you can train your pets – where to get them, and what to do with them.

Hyacintha: Thanks again, hun! We are really getting to the bottom of this Hunter business. Today, I would like to share with everyone about Hunter pet abilities. In the last guide, we talked about which pets could use which skills, but today, I really want to hit on what these abilities are.

Ohanraela: What will make one pet stand out from the others are the abilities that you teach it. You can learn abilities from your local Pet Trainer and teach them to your pet. Doing so requires training points, which your pet gains as it grows in level and loyalty.

Some abilities can only be learned by taming animals that come with it. Once you use the ability a few times, you will automatically learn it, allowing you to teach it to other pets. Note that you have to be up fighting with your animal to learn it. It is sort of like, learning through observation.

VERY IMPORTANT: SOME ABILITIES CAN ONLY BE LEARNED BY TAMING ANIMALS THAT ALREADY HAVE THAT ABILITY!!!! (We will cover which ones to tame, later on.)

Hyacintha: Okay, so Rogues and Druid Cats use Energy, casters use Mana, and Warriors and Bear Form Druids use rage. What do pets use?

Ohanraela: Pets use Focus to fuel their abilities, which works the same way as a Rogue’s Energy, actually. Your pet starts with 100 Focus and it is burned up and regenerates as your pet uses its abilities. Your pet gains back Focus much more quickly than you do with mana  or Rage but it always gets used up right away, it seems. You can always offset this with your talents if your build allows for it, of course.

Hyacintha: Okay, so now we are going to talk about the abilities themselves. Care to lead us in?

Ohanraela: Of course. There are Active Skills and Passive Skills. Active skills are the ones that must be learned by taming wild beasts who have it, then training it at the trainers. However, Growl is an exception to this rule and can always be learned at the trainer.

COWER

Description: Cower, causing no damage but lowering your [the pet's] threat, making the enemy less likely to attack you [the pet].

·  Cost: 15 Focus

·  Range: Melee Range

·  Cast Time: Instant

·  Cooldown: 5 sec

Can be learned by: All pet families.

Cower is arguably a waste of an ability slot. Pets make up a significant part of your damage output but unless Growl is set to auto-cast, they cause much less threat than any human player would. Even with Bestial Wrath and several other Beast Mastery talents, the only way that they can pull aggro is if a nearby tank is doing a terrible job at maintaining threat on your target.

LvL  Rank TP     Threat Reduction

5       1      8      Reduces threat.

15      2      10     Reduces more threat than Rank 1.

25      3      12     Reduces more threat than Rank 2.

35      4      14     Reduces more threat than Rank 3.

45      5      16     Reduces more threat than Rank 4.

55      6      18     Reduces more threat than Rank 5.

65      7      21     Reduces more threat than Rank 6.
